Bridging Fashion studies and anthropology

Fashion is a part of culture - and it’s time that the fields of Fashion Studies and Anthropology recognize that they have similar goals in understanding the cultural context and motivations behind the decisions we make when we get dressed every day.

defining fashion

Developed from a final project for the required course Fashion Cultures in the Fashion Studies MA at Parsons School of Design, “Defining Fashion” is a digital humanities project in the works that documents and shares what YOU think of fashion. What does the word “fashion” mean to you, how do you use fashion, and what does it mean to DEFINE fashion?

Born from frustrations with Fashion Studies and its continual grapple with the definition of fashion, “Defining Fashion” looks at how every day people, both in and outside of the fashion industry and fashion scholarship, interact with and shape the definition of fashion.
